What are implant dentures?

Implant-supported dentures use dental implants (biocompatible artificial roots) as an aid in helping secure and retain dentures. This can be a great advantage over traditional dentures, particularly in the lower jaw. Because these implant dentures now have an anchoring mechanism they are more stable and our patient’s ability to chew, laugh, and speak are much improved. Implant dentures in Portland, Maine, are a cost effective solution and in certain cases, we can retrofit an existing traditional denture with attachments secured to the implants.

What’s involved?

The first step in anchoring your denture with dental implants is the surgical placement by our surgical colleagues (periodontists and/or oral surgeons). The dental implants are inserted into the jawbone by Drs. Best, Traina, Chang and Saba. While the specific number of implants required will depend on your individual needs, most cases require 4-6 dental implants per denture. Once the implants have been placed and allowed sufficient healing time, your denture is attached via various attachment mechanisms. This provides your denture with exceptional stability. In fact, many patients report that their implant-supported dentures feel and function more like their natural teeth.
